These days the majority of pet owners feed their dogs commercial dog food of some description, as opposed to home made dog food. It's because the pet food manufacturers spend billions of dollars on advertising campaigns, and pretty much control what veterinarians learn at vet school about nutrition, because they invariably sponsor those portions of the course.
